National Honor Society

The National Honor Society, established nationally in 1921 is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginnings in 1921.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

National Honor Society at St. Peter Chanel

Students who are seniors, juniors, or second semester sophomores and who have a 3.300 accumulative grade point average are eligible to apply for membership in the St. Peter Chanel Chapter of the National Honor Society. Other criteria for membership include: wholesome character, outstanding leadership, and exemplary service. Applications are made available in January and an independent board made up of faculty members makes the final decision on membership. New members are inducted in early March.

Once students are members, they are required to attend monthly meetings and to participate in the many service activities sponsored by NHS. Some of these activities are as follows:

Tasty Tuesday:

Every Tuesday, NHS members sell a variety of donuts, pastries, and juices to the students, faculty, and staff at Chanel. The proceeds from these sales fund various projects, such as library improvements and the Memorial Garden.

Malachi House:

Every year around Thanksgiving, NHS sponsors a drive to support Malachi House, a home for terminally ill people who have nowhere else to go. NHS collects non-perishable food items, toiletries, and other needed items to support the important work that these volunteers do for the neediest of people.
