The Flame is Chanel’s school newspaper and one of our many extra-curricular activities. The articles are decided upon by the students and written by the students. The publication, which comes out six times per year, also features photographs and cartoons created by the staff. The Flame includes news, sports, and entertainment articles, as well as editorials and features. Staff positions are available to students in all grade levels. The newspaper is moderated by Jenny Miroglotta.
The Flame Receives Awards
The Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded the St. Peter Chanel 2007-2008 newspaper, The Flame, a Bronze Medal. The judge said: “The coverage is extensive and highlights as many students and staff as possible—I see this as a great strength of the publication and appreciate the effort to make this a newspaper that is relevant and engaging of the student population . . . I appreciate very much the above and beyond effort given to profiling student athletes and staff. It shows that everyone is significant at your school.”
In addition, the Quill and Scroll, an International Honorary Society for High School Journalists, has awarded The Flame an International Honor Award in the 2008 News Media Evaluation Service. The Quill and Scroll judge said: "You have a newspaper that you should be proud of, and I enjoyed reading the stories and issues that are important to your school."
